Sanyo Eneloop
Sanyo's Eneloop bike is one of the most well-designed electric bikes on the market, receiving a prize at the International CES Innovations 2010 Design & Engineering Awards, grabbing the Best of Innovations prize at the awards, which are now in their 33rd year. It scooped the highest overall score in the Eco-Design & Sustainable Technology categories.
The 26-inch bike features a torque sensor which engages the 250-watt motor, automatically matching the rider's effort in standard mode and doubling it in power-up mode. There is also an automatic mode which switches into power-up when needed and back to standard when the bike is up to speed. This adds up to a very smooth and responsive ride.
The Eneloop bike features regenerative braking, which uses braking energy to charge the battery and significantly extends the bike's range. The battery itself is also both lighter and smaller than most e-bike batteries, which contributes to the bike's low 45-pound weight. Sanyo also equipped the handlebars with a convenient push-button panel that allows the rider to select between power modes and switch the light system on and off. The bike also comes with chrome fenders, a rear cargo rack, bell, and light system, all of which make the bike very practical for commutes and all-weather use. The Sanyo is a showcase of good e-bike design, and definitely deserves a closer look.
